Intuitive Eating Principle # 4: Challenge the Food Police

Today on the podcast we're talking about Intuitive Eating Principle number 4… challenge the food police.

You may be wondering, “what is the food police?”.

The food police are all of the self-critical and negative self-talk around food that bring up guilt and shame.

“You shouldn't eat after 6pm.”

“You overate yesterday, so don't eat again even though you may be hungry.”

“You shouldn’t eat __ amount of bread.”

These are just a few of the food police messages I commonly hear, but there are so many more.

What’s crazy, is that these messages are so common in our culture, they seem to be the truth. But anything that makes you feel shame or guilt around food, is not good! Food is not moral, and therefore cannot make you a better or worse person.

Our self-talk matters! It impacts how we feel and our actions, and the food police mindset is no different. These shame-ridden thoughts perpetuate feeling out of control around food and keep us a slave to food.

Learning to change your self-talk from policing to one that’s empower will transform your relationship with food dramatically!

It starts with becoming aware of the inner dialogue — those voices that make us feel shame and guilt around food — and then challenging that dialogue and weighing it up to truth.
