Intuitive Eating Principle # 5: The Satisfaction Factor

Today on the podcast we're talking about Intuitive Eating Principle number 5… the satisfaction factor.

This principle is probably one of my favorite principles of intuitive eating. When my clients start practicing this, it truly makes such a difference in their relationship with food. It’s such a joy to see!

The satisfaction factor is based on the concept of maslow's hierarchy of needs. We want what we cannot have.

When it comes to food, if you don’t meet your need for satisfaction, you are going to constantly be seeking out that satisfaction.

For example, let’s say you really want ice cream, but you think, “I can’t have ice cream because it’s too rich.” So, you decide to have some yogurt. But the yogurt does not taste like the ice cream, or fill that desire. So, you eventually just have the ice cream because you can’t stop thinking about it. In the end, you end up eating more food than you would have if you had just had some ice cream from the start.

One sign that you are not honoring satisfaction is if you finish a meal and are still thinking about food. You may even be physically full, but you want something more.

Satisfaction with food allows you to finish a meal, and move on with your day, not thinking about food until it’s time to eat again.

Nutrition and health are not just about eating enough food and a balance of nutrients. Satisfaction is a key factor in health, enjoyment, and a normal relationship with food.
