Gentle Nutrition with Rachael Hartley

Has nutrition felt stressful for you?

You feel like it’s become just a long list of rules you have to follow?

This week on the podcast I got to talk with Rachael Hartley, a non-diet dietitian based out of Boston, MA and author of the new book, “Gentle Nutrition” all about…well…gentle nutrition!

You’ll hear how Rachael defines gentle nutrition, the top advice she has when it comes to nutrition (it’s probably not what you think!), and her approach to helping people be consistent with good nutrition and meal planning.

Nutrition, in my opinion…and it seems in Rachael’s also… has become over-complicated for the general person. Being healthy for the majority of us, from a food standpoint, boils down to really just a few key concepts with the most important one being eating enough.

One of the things that stood out to me most with this conversation was what Rachael shared about, what she referred to as, the nutrition heirarchy of needs. At the bottom is eating enough. As she said, “all the kale and superfoods in the world don’t matter if you aren’t eating enough.”

Here are a few of my favorite quotes from the episode…

“Most people want to feel good day-to-day, so in the big picture we’re going to eat in a pretty healthy way if weight isn’t the focus.”

“The most important thing to think about when it comes to nutrition is whether you are eating enough food.”

“It doesn’t matter how many superfoods you are eating, if you’re not eating enough, none of those superfoods matter.”

“Maintaining a mindset of flexibility is the most important thing when it comes to following through with our intentions.”
